The federal 探亲假和病假 Act (FMLA) guarantees eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid job and benefits-protected 探亲假和病假 (FML) in a rolling 12-month period for one or more of the following reasons:
- the birth, adoption or foster placement of a 孩子 (at U of I a portion of this may be covered by 带薪育儿假)

- to care for an immediate family member (spouse, 孩子, parent) with a serious medical condition
- for qualifying exigencies arising out of the fact that the spouse, 孩子 or parent of the employee is on active duty (or has been notified of an impending call or order to active duty) in the armed forces
The FMLA also grants up to 26 weeks of leave during any single rolling 12-month period if the employee is the spouse, 孩子, parent or next of kin caring for a covered military service member or veteran recovering from an injury or illness suffered while on active duty in the armed forces, that existed before the beginning of the member’s active duty and was aggravated by service, or that manifested itself before or after the member became a veteran.
